Frances Calwell is abducted. Her fiance, Pete Mallory calls in the police and a policewoman from Missing Persons takes an interest in the case long after the matter has been passed on to the detectives. In time, it becomes evident that a top gangster is involved but because of his association with important people, the investigation stalls and becomes a political football.It is this association, particularly with a crooked cop that ultimately costs him dearly.

Meanwhile Frances escapes from her captors with the aid of the crime boss's bookkeeper. Finally, Frances and Pete are once again face to face but her place has been taken by the policewoman, Sue Topley.

Everyone involved tries desperately to mend the hurt, but in so doing tragedy occurs and those who survive must adjust or pay a lifelong price for their actions.
