Captain Thomas Forsyth's tour of Afghanistan, and perhaps his army career, are brutally cut short when he's badly hurt by a roadside bomb. Returning home to Lambourn, where his estranged mother - Josephine Kauri, the 'First Lady' of racing - trains racehorses, he receives a frosty reception.
But this has little to do with Josephine's preference for putting business before family. Her prize-winning horses are all losing races. And it soon becomes clear to Tom that someone is trying to put his mother out of business. Using his state-of-the-art military training, he will find and defeat these individuals.
Can he save his mother's career and reputation in time? Or will the wounded soldier find himself once more in the crossfire?
