At the turn of the 20th century, a young girl named, Marigolde, receives a doll for her birthday. It isn't the one she wanted. She hates it for several reasons. First, she thinks it is ugly and second, she believes it is alive. The girl throws the doll away. By a set of fortunate circumstances, the doll makes its way to San Francisco. There it becomes a real living little girl and quickly thereafter, a beautiful young woman befriended by two aspiring actresses, Rose and Ginger, who help her get hired to work in the theater. Both initially are her friends. One of them is loyal and true forever. The other eventually becomes her arch enemy. They introduce Dianna to Ebb Ziegfeld, the second greatest producer in show business, who falls in love with her. Our talented heroine, now known as Dianna Doll, becomes a theatrical star. She appears normal to everyone, but has to keep her origin and the reason she is now living as a human, a secret. Dianna meets and marries the man she knows she was destined to marry, Lad Van, who also works in the theater, but it is not to last. He leaves her on the very day she becomes a movie star, by a director she once disliked, a genius German Anglophile, Cecil de Milo. Together they create a string of successful films. Dianna hires a young girl, Stormy Witherspoon to be her assistant even after she discovers Stormy had been the unknowing source of trouble between Dianna and Rose. On a trip to England to publicize a new film, Dianna meets the next love of her life, Lord Alexander Darling, and his friend, Howard Smythe-Smits, a man who will catapult her career and accomplishments even higher. Both success and tragedy continue to follow Dianna. Lord Darling is killed in the war. Reigning as Hollywood's Queen, Dianna keeps moving on. She opens her own studio. It, too, is successful and accepting the lead in a stage musical meets the final long lasting love she had always sought, an actor much younger than she, Lance Starr, nee Larry Schwartz. Dianna is surrounded by many who, along with her adoring public, love and adore her, but there are others, who not only dislike, but hate her. At a tribute being given in her honor and being filmed by television crews and in front of all her guests, Dianna with no one near her, cries out, My God, you killed me. .She collapses to the floor. She is dead. Murdered? Yes! By which one of the people in her life?
