Panic began to take hold of Lauren as the burning sensation increased. The metal began to melt into her skin, burning her flesh. She stumbled outside, tearing at the necklace as the metal sunk into her skin. Thus starts Lauren's journey into the world of dangerous magic. She gains control of an unpredictable armored knight, who is the key to the wizard Vurlath's plan to release a demon bent on entering Lauren's world. She is forced to come to grips with her burgeoning romance with an ancient Elf named Aust, while they attempt to escape an impossible trap. Oton, a thief and con-man, is sucked into this world of combat and intrigue by a chance encounter with an old assassin in pursuit of Lauren, learns the price of power and that a con-man can be conned. Together, they have to put their pursuit on hold as they too are betrayed by the wizard Vurlath. Following in the wake of destruction of an unstoppable metal construct, they attempt to stop it from retrieving an artifact of the old world that would release the very demon Lauren is bent on stopping. Facing betrayal by those closest to them while desperately unlocking their newly discovered powers, they race toward a confrontation of cataclysmic proportions.
