On the trail in a great wilderness, John Welch learns much about life-- and love. Hidessa, ask her again to please not be frightened. She says that she is trying very hard. Hidessa, ask her what her name is . . . what I should call her. She says that her people call her, Loweja. Tell her that I think her name is beautiful, and ask her if she wants to go with me to the mountains and help me with my work. She says that she is your spouse now and you are her on?ss?, she must do as you say and go with you wherever you go. spouse? Oh, no! She's not my wife! We're not married! For God sakes, Hidessa! Go ahead and tell her that! You bought her from her father. She is your wife, now. I cannot tell her that she is not your wife, when I know it to be a lie! That is not the way we do things in a Christian society, Hidessa . . . there must be a ceremony before a man and woman can be called husband and wife! There must be vows exchanged! There has been no such ceremony! I am her guardian, maybe, and only her guardian! Tell her that! I do not know what this word guardian is. I have never heard that word before. What does it mean? A guardian is someone who will watch over her, protect her, feed her, and take care of her . . . and make sure she has clothes to wear. You call that a guardian, maybe where you come from, but here in my village we call that a husband.
