This study describes the history of piano music in Brazil such as the first appearence of pianos in the country during the beginning of the 19th century, the history of its importation, the emergence of domestic production and how the instrument became popular. After the second part of the 19th century, millions of immigrants came to Brazil, including large number of foreign pianists and piano teachers. They started to introduce professional music education into the country. The aim of this study is to reveal the emergence and development of brazilian professional piano playing and pedagogy, the appearance of the first Conservatory and piano faculty, as well as the first representatives of the national performing school. Much of this work is dedicated to the most important national composers and the characteristics of their piano compositions.
