Marton Murphy started his working life with just a few hundred dollars to his name. Marton Murphy began his working life a chore boy, potato picker, and blacksmith's helper on Prince Edward Island. He left PEI when he was 18 years old to hitchhike to Alberta, but wound up walking a large part of the way. In Alberta, Marton worked as a roughneck, welder, mechanic, and catskinner in both the oilfield and construction businesses. At various times, he also worked as a cowboy and taxi driver. For a period of ten years he was employed by a large international company and subsequently started his first business enterprises-in the oilfield during the winters and in construction during the summers. He achieved all of this while serving in a voluntary capacity in his community, his church, and with charitable and political groups across Canada. Over the course of a working lifetime-of more than five decades-Marton Murphy has successfully climbed to the top of the corporate ladder. During his ascent, he has expanded his business interests and empire from activities in the oilfield and construction industry, into land, cattle, engineering, contracting, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, and travel. He is an entrepreneur, inventor, environmentalist, philanthropist, political activist, adventurer, sportsman, builder, traveller, and author.
