The Exalter says he is god. Under his rule he promises to end violence and solve all economic turmoil. Those unwilling to accept the Exalter as their new leader and worship him as god in human form are forced to slave away in labor villages, working for what little food they can gather and even lower wages. Under the Exalter's rule these unfortunate men and women are known simply as Derogates. In this tumultuous transition, Nicolai takes on the job of overseeing the Derogates. As his work becomes routine and his own wife begins to slip away from him, he feels that his life under the Exalter is meaningless. Droughts, strange earthly phenomenon, and the release of countless prisoners cause him and others to doubt the Exalter's rule. Where are the promises of peace? When the disappearance of countless Derogates causes mass speculation and chaos, Nicolai finds himself looking for answers about his family, his government, and even the Exalter himself. Armies begin to turn on their leaders, and a war of survival looms on the horizon. In this uncertain future Nicolai may find himself running for his very life. The Exalter looked confident like that of a lion surrounded by starved and weakened animals. My ways are easy to follow without guilt or heavy expectations.
