Rick and Ian have lunch with Sir Marcus Fullerton and his candidate for the proposed third senior vice president of the European operation; Ian and Rickard are unimpressed. When Ian informs Sir Marcus of his and Rickard's opinion the financier exacts his revenge by informing a number of newspaper reporters that the author of Ian's book A Little Bit of Levity is employed at AmerConCorp's London office. During a visit to Michael's family in Dorset a mid-November week-end is agreed with Luke offering to see about hotel reservations at the venue. The party is a huge success. The General, Mrs Schultzer and Helge Rheinhardt all attend, at the same time taking a week's vacation, their first holiday in thirty years. Ian is required to fly to Boroburg at very short notice to give a presentation to four of the Corporation's major stockholders. He then has to return to Boroburg with the General immediately after the civil partnership party for an entire week during which he makes presentations of his plan to a great many more people affected by his plan. He returns to Boroburg just before Christmas to make a final presentation to all the Corporation's stockholders Ben Solomon and Lucca Pirelli, AmerConCorp's vice president legal, arrive in London to sign contracts for a new phase at the Manchester site and then go on to sign contracts for two new projects in Germany. There Ben informs the German clients of Ian and Rickard's promotions, to Senior Vice President Europe. Don Sullivan is also informed of his own promotion to Technical Director of the German projects. Just over a week before Christmas Ian receives a phone call from Jessie Schultzer. The soloists and guest conductor have withdrawn from performing at the annual charity concert in Boroburg; could Ian help in persuading Edie Bates to perform in their stead. Edie does accept, Ian brings a flight forward and they both travel to Boroburg where Ian acts as her manager. Edie herself embarks on a strenuous programme of rehearsals resulting in a huge success. The success comes at a price, however; the dismissal of the general manager of the concert hall. In the background for Ian though not for Michael A Little Bit of Levity proves to be a success and sales continue with a huge demand on publication and a growing demand in the period leading up to Christmas.
